Once Faulkner dropped out of high school he became employed in a bank and began to write. Even though he was a high school drop out Faulkner still attended the University of Mississippi from 1919 until 1921. He again dropped out of school to attempt to generate interest in his writing. 

Brave New World Chapter 3 Study Questions

1. How do the children play together? What is childhood like?
Naked children play ball games, or squat silently in twos or threes in the shrubs.
2. How is our world depicted? How do we get from here to there?
Our world is looked down upon because things were simpler and not everything was invented or based on increasing consumption.
3. Why must games be so complex in this society?
Games are not created unless they bring something new and interesting to stores.  4. Why are strong emotions dangerous? Family relationships? Romance? Religion? Art? Culture?
Emotions could be dangerous to learn too much about because people could relate to them or be intrigued by them and want to bring them into their lifestyles. Also, there is the potential to get hurt with these things, which leads to unhappiness.
5. How is sexuality used in this novel? Do you see any problems with it?
Sexuality is used as a form of amusement, and children have been conditioned to start "erotic play" at the ripe age of seven, so by the time they are into adulthood, sex is such a mundane thing that it is weird to go weeks without it. It is a little weird for me to imagine these acts happening before the age of ten, also sex is portrayed to us as a sacred thing that you do with someone you care about, but we think that because that is what we have been taught.
6. What does Mustapha Mond do? What is his relationship to history?
Mustapha Mond is the controller of the Western European zone of London. He is the one who decides what to tell people about history and how to word things so people will be disgusted at the thought of the way we live.
7. Is there anything unusual about Lenina Crowne? Bernard Marx? What? Why?
Lenina seems to like to go against the expected of most people. She has spent over a month with the same man, when the usual time limit is a week as the most, and shows an interest in Bernard Marx when he is socially unacceptable. Bernard Marx is not your typical Alpha because of his smaller size, and this makes him insecure, when an Alpha should be proud and confident.
8. How does Huxley use the cinematic technique toward the end of this chapter?
He switches between different conversations very quickly and they become as big as one sentence then we switches to a different character speaking. I thought it was powerful, but very confusing and hard to keep up with.
9. What is soma? What are its uses?
Soma is a pill the people take to keep them from feeling too much. It keeps them in a happy euphoria.
10. How do people age in this society? People dont age, they take pills to prevent them from looking older, and die at the age of 60 so they never have to be seen as withered and old and "ugly".

What Jiro Means To Me

By watching this movie I have become very touched by Jiro's story on how he got started and just his life in general. He was a man that left his home at 9/10 years old and made something for himself. He's now 80 years old and continues to work crazy hours just because he enjoys his job so much. I've learned from him that if you are going to work, have a job that you enjoy so work isn't just something you go to do. Work should be something you enjoy going to, not something to where everyday you find yourself dragging there. 

Just my luck

So I guess no more cheer for me. Last night at the first round CIF game I tore my rotator cuff during halftime. I will have to be out for a few weeks, but by the time I'm better season will be over. This was a season filled with ups and downs, but I wouldn't change it for the world 

Catcher in the Rye: Symbol

I think that the ducks are a symbol that represent Holden's fear of losing things. He asks where they go during the winter because he doesn't want to loose the ducks or for them to disappear 

Basketball Season

I know this post is about a week late but I just wanted to acknowledge a great game last Friday for the Righetti Boys Basketball team. One thing that really touched me about this game was that with about 2 minutes left in the 4th quarter coach Barbarick puts in Christian Farmer, a player who has special needs, into the game and he scored two 2 pointers and a 3 pointer during those last two minutes. Seeing how the student body reacted just touched me. Seeing the school so excited for Christian and his shining moment was a great way to end the game 

Something Different

Well Tuesday I was out of class for a school related function and here are a few photos from my day. I went to Makenzie Jr High school, along with my fellow cheerleaders, to perform for the 8th graders there. It was a different experience for all of us but also fun. Our space that we had to perform was very limited,but we made it all work. The students after were so sweet, telling us how good we did. I really appreciated the feed back we got while we went to promote the spirit program for Righetti High School.  

Catcher in the Rye

Just by reading the first chapter, which is only 6 pages, I've taken much interest into the book. it's not like most books. When the author describes someone/something he usually does so in long, run-on sentences. The author also uses cuss words frequently which you usually don't find in a book assigned for a reading in an English class.

The Next Steps

• My topic is still somewhat undefined in a way, I have an interest in culinary and also want to tie in medical. I've been talking with family and doing some research and think that a way I can pursue them both is to become a dietitian. 
• My interest for food started at a young age, I believe it was 6 years old, and since then I've been in the kitchen helping in any way possible. I recently have taken an interest into the medical field and have been bouncing in between the two trying to figure out which one I would like more. I feel that these two matter to me so much because my family has a history of diabetics and I know that having that condition limits what they can and can't eat. Maybe by me going into these two fields I can keep my family healthy and help them with what they can/can't eat. 

MUSIC AS LITERATURE

                                  Literature is defined as "writings in which expression and form, in connection with ideas of permanent and universal interest, are characteristic or essential features, as poetry, novels, history, biography, and essays." Also in a sense music should be added to that list because it is a type of literature. Music is a way of expressing emotion through words with a back-beat to it. In all reality, music is a story expressing how the artist feels or flashes back to a time in the artists life that they felt was significant.
